8 speed ZF is probably the best torque-converter auto ever made, and is seriously better than most DCTs I've driven.

I've actually driven it with the auto. I was pleasantly surprised with the response.

I've heard it's fantastic, but the M235i is more about feel and involvement—its character is based on that of a small, sporty coupe from decades ago. Give it to me in my 7-series, but keep it damned far away from the only lively BMW! (Note: I do not own a 7, but am open to any donations.)

I have driven it with paddles, it's awesome! That being said, girlfriend ordered stickshift. MAN UP

How do you quantify "feel and involvement"?

I swear by mine. Honestly the best auto I've driven. I love this car.

BMW has great auto transmissions. Pair it with a flash after you get it and he'll be happier than ever.

How do you quantify "not giving a shit about specs sheets and ease of use?" I'm pretty sure you wouldn't buy a manual M235i for the numbers, so how can you quantify that it's better than a heavier, faster, more assisted cars? You can't, so it's safe to assume the purchase isn't based on what you can measure but what you can feel. And a manual transmission results in more feeling and involvement, and therefore a better driving experience for someone who likes to drive.

It was good enough for the 24hrs of nurburgring.

Best non-dct automatic I've ever driven. It shifts pretty fast.

If you want to commute, yes. If you want to drive , no.

And yes, I have a BMW (6MT, of course) but spent lots of time in F30's, F10's, and more with the 8AT and while it is one of the best 8ATs out there, it comes down to if you want a stick. If you do, you'll never be happy, even with the best clutchless car.

Looks like it's not exclusive to BMW:

WOW! That's pretty cool. 5 series GT drivers can say they use the same transmission as a Rolls Royce haha. It's a great transmission.

I've heard it isn't great in the 7 series though, any info on that?

Haha true! And I think Bentley was in the list too.

Interesting I haven't heard about issues in the 7 Series. I read that the 7 Series got the transmission first. Maybe it's a calibration issue.

According to people on the 7 series forum they've noticed a hesitation, kind of like turbo lag but apparently more noticeable. I read these complaints a while ago but I think after getting the transmissions flashed by BMW it rectified the problem. Haven't heard of it anywhere else.

Interesting. If the flash fixed the issue then I guess it's not a huge deal.

These newer transmissions are so complex. The software plays a huge role in how they perform. I read that the DCT in the Ferrari 458 is the same exact box in the SLS AMG. But they perform very differently because Ferrari calibrated the transmission for hyper quick shifts and Mercedes calibrated it for slower shifts to extend the life of the transmission. It wasn't until the Black Series that the SLS was setup for quick shifts.

Yeah, with how advanced everything is getting it makes me want to teach myself how to tune and code cars.

Easy way to make side money while being around cars + I'd be able to improve my own car.

That would be cool!

But it would also be incredibly tough. I'm sure the manufacturers close things down as much as possible. And the second you tweak something they'll void your warranty. I would only risk it on a car that's getting a bit older and is well past the warranty date.

The interesting thing is that there seems to always be tradeoffs with these complex systems. The more boost you run in a turbo and the faster a transmission shifts the quicker things have issues. I was reading on FChat that Mercedes had a valid reason to make the shifts in the regular SLS slower. The GETRAG box does seem more fragile in the Ferrari. Some owners have required transmission replacements well under 100K miles, whereas the box will probably last much longer than that in the AMG.

The good old fashioned stick still seems to the safest thing, especially in a high power car. A well built stick will pretty much last forever if you drive it properly. The only cost is the clutch replacements. I wonder how much a GETRAG DCT or ZF 8HP cost to replace...

having driven a ZF 8 speed that received an alpina flash I have to say it was MUCH different from stock. It didn't feel like the transmission was strained or anything but it felt like it was shifting faster and working harder to do it. The car was FBO so that probably has a large effect on i too. I'm sure leaving it "softest" would allow it to be the most reliable. I bet that the ZF will last a lot longer in a Bentley than it will in a 335i because of how they'll be driven and how they've been calibrated to shift.

Luckily I've been able to code some minor things in my E90. Small things like folding mirrors and being able to close windows/sunroof with my fob.

No problem! Anything you have in mind? Rolling windows/closing sunroof with the fob has been extremely convenient. Just lemme know what you'd like done and I'll explain how to do it as best as I can.

Awesome, thanks! I don't have anything custom in mind. I'll just take any instructions on cool stuff you've done. You should make an Oppo post for E9X owners to share the knowledge. You'll be a hero!
